My three year old cat, Loaf, sometimes has these coughing fits that make me concerned. When she's done coughing, she has a scratchy voice like she has a lot of mucus in her throat. My first cat pretty much never coughed up a hairball, so I don't know what a hairball cough sounds like. In case that's what this coughing is, I brush her daily and feed her a variety of hairball treats/foods to help keep it in control. She has coughed up a couple of pretty big hairballs since I got her, but never when I'm looking.
Loaf does have some health issues. My vet theorizes that when she was a kitten she got sick and was never treated, and ended up with damaged nasal passages. So she's got a lot of snot (which is clear colored and runny, so no infection), and she sneezes sometimes and sprays it everywhere! I have only had her for a year, so I don't know her history before that time. I don't yet have an air filter/purifier, but I do have a humidifier that I keep running 24/7 in my one bedroom apartment since it's very dry here with the heat running. Plus she loves to hang out with me in the bathroom when I shower, and she gets a nice long steam bath.
Loaf is otherwise very healthy. She's extremely energetic, has a healthy appetite, uses the litter box regularly with few problems. She has had some behavioral issues with the litter box in the past when I'm away for more than a few days, but hasn't had a UTI or anything. She's an indoor cat only, and has no contact with other animals.
But from a little research, I found out about feline asthma. Loaf will be having her yearly vet exam in a couple of months, so I'm going to ask more about this cough at that visit. I have been trying to catch her coughing on video so that I can show my vet the noise she makes to get a more accurate idea of what's going on. And I finally did! So I thought I'd post it here to see if anyone knows if this is hairball cough, asthma cough, or something else. I want to be able to ask the right questions and provide the right info to my vet when I take Loaf in. I will show my vet this video when I take her in as well. =)
